We sat down with one of our youngest deputy managers, Katie, who at just 21 has worked so hard to get to the senior position that she’s in! We talk all about her experience, favourite parts of her job and her advice for anyone looking to get into senior positions in hospitality.
Can you tell us a little about your experience working before you joined Elite?
I started my career in hospitality waitressing at private catering events like weddings and it taught me some basics about the industry before moving to Elite.
Can you talk about your experience with Elite?
I started with Elite just after I turned 17 part time at The Poacher and Partridge in Tonbridge. I did my trial shift on the bar and was trained on food running when I started. I ran food for over 2 years and when I started getting trained on the floor I picked it up quite quickly as I already had all the knowledge of the menu. After lockdown I got used to being on the floor more and started to jump in different sections when needed.
Another lockdown came but I was given the opportunity to work the takeaway service, which helped my confidence on answering the phone. I began to get trained for a promotion at The Poacher but then I was asked to work at The Lazy Fox, Mark Cross and move there full time. It was quite daunting as this was a brand new pub but I decided to go for it and I’m so glad I did!
Since I joined the Lazy Fox team in July 2021, I’ve gained 3 promotions and am now Deputy Manager! I’m 21 and a lot of people are shocked by my age and being in the position I am. I’ve always liked my independence and I’m so proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished so far.
What’s your favourite part of working with Elite?
My favourite part is the people I work with and the people I meet everyday. I’ve met so many amazing people and made friends for life.
What are your career aspirations long term?
My long term career goal is to own my own pub one day!
Any advice for anyone looking to get into your role?
My main advice is to be confident in yourself and in your work. Confidence is key!
