We wish that was a straightforward question! The logo is always decided after a name has been chosen. The name of a pub has been chosen a few different ways. Some names come to our owner out of nowhere, a light bulb moment or catchy sounding name. Sometimes a name will arise based on research being done in the area and its history. Sometimes what’s going on in the world can affect the names. For example, The Wishful Thinker, our newest pub. The pub was acquired during the Coronavirus pandemic when times were tough and we needed some hope – that’s where The Wishful Thinker was born.
Ideas for names are always collaborative and any new ideas are always welcomed!

Once the name has been decided then the design work begins. We work with a really talented artist and designer, Simon who captures our vision perfectly. Our owner will sit with Simon and talk over the name of the pub and the reasonings behind it to give Simon some more inspiration on the logo.
Simon will then go away and work on some drafts. He’ll usually create 3-6 designs sketched on drawn onto paper to send back to us to have a look through. Sometimes the perfect design is right there, sometimes there’s an idea we need tweaked and sometimes we go back to the drawing board!
Along with the sketches, Simon will send over some colour ideas. You’ve probably noticed we have signature colours you see flowing through our pubs. We like to stick to earthy, humble, warm, cosy, classy colours and any new pubs slot in nicely with this theme.
At Elite, we want to make sure everything is perfect. When coming up with the logo, we had an initial design that we loved, and got right to end of nearly digitalising but something wasn’t quite right, it didn’t quite fit the pub and the area so we went back to the drawing board and came up with the design we have now which is a farmer stumbling across a pot of gold!

After the sketches have been approved, they get sent to be digitalised where we add the pub name to the image. When we get to this stage, it gets sent back to our owner and Simon to have a meeting, look at the final product and see if they’re happy with it. This is when smaller tweaks will be made e.g. small colour changes.

The process takes as long as it takes. Some are quicker than others, but it’s never rushed. As we mentioned before, we want every aspect to be just right before we make it public.

Elite Pubs has quite recognisable colour schemes with greens and blues and warm earthy tones. We don’t usually stray too far from this but we also want each pub to have its own identity. For example The Pheasant Plucker, Sevenoaks has the staple colour of blue but with some browns, and earthy tones. While The Lazy Fox, also keeps in with the blue but with mustard woven in. Ultimately, we want our pubs to feel cosy, warm, inviting and bright stark colours aren’t going to do that!
